The Highest Heights

Some joys of childhood never cease. Like licking a Bomb Pop — still tasty after all these years. And flying a kite — a definite good time. Although it's often difficult to schedule time to do the latter, the Saint Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4400 or www.slsc.org) is hosting an event you ought not to miss. Master kite-maker Buteo Huang from Taiwan exhibits more than 40 of his extraordinary works of art (like the one you see pictured) beginning Saturday, May 3, and continuing through Sunday, June 15. To kick off the show, there's an outdoor cultural festival held adjacent to the science center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. During this free extravaganza, expect to see all kinds of dazzling kite demonstrations and prepare to be amazed by the twenty-foot-wide pterosaur kite — that weighs less than two pounds! For more information about the festival, visit www.taastl.org.

  1. It opens my eyes and minds to see the kites being utilized as media of visual arts. What I see there is not just a number of toys called kites but a very serious expression through the shape and the dynamic of kites. The expression is unique and not available through other artistic media or formats. I happen to have seen the wonderful sight of all the kites of clouds, the fishes, and the boat all swinging gracefully in the Science Center. It is sensational.
