Mexican food gets the white-tablecloth treatment at this attractive spot in Forest Park Southeast’s rising Grove neighborhood. The menu doesn’t veer far from the dishes you likely know — salsa and guacamole, black beans and tortilla soup, carnitas and carne asada — but the quality of ingredients and focus on presentation aspire to the top shelf. The guacamole, with avocado cut into chunks rather than mashed, is a standout, as are the tender, porky carnitas, especially when paired with a tart tomatillo salsa. The tequila selection is outstanding, and the house margaritas are excellent. $$$

Interesting masks hung on the walls and good paint job. But incompetent kitchen. Salad soaked in dressing. Looked like a hodgepodge on the plate. Carne Asada was tough. The sides were cold. My son's dinner also cold. Mashed plantain: dense, unpleasant, too sweet. An order of flan had a layer of cold, congealed fat near the bottom. Only the decaf coffee was good. Wait staff was nice, but untrained. Young, male waiter may have confused me with his mother who moves the plates around at dinner, so he doesn't have to. For coffee refills, he stood across from me, picked the cup up by the rim, reached in and out of my face. Instead of coming around the table and standing to my right. Without thinking, I mistakenly left my usual 20%), so dinner for two with tip cost $100. So mediocre, but for that price it ought to have been poppin'.
