An Ethiopian restaurant likely to appeal to novice and connoisseur alike, Meskerem is a welcome addition to South Grand's multi-culti mix. Even the injera — the spongy, slightly sour bread with which you scoop up your food — is better than average here. Newcomers might want to try the Meskerem Combo, which offers both straightforward tibs wat (beef in the classic Ethiopian berbere sauce), and the more interesting gomen besaega (beef with collard greens). Vegetarians will find several delicious lentil, chickpea and sautéed vegetable dishes, while adventurous carnivores may want to try kitfo, raw beef chopped very fine and seasoned with clarified butter and fiery mitmita chile powder.

    I love this restaurant! I have dined at Meskerem 4 times so far, and each was a wonderfully filling, relaxing and friendly experience.

    I used to frequent The Red Sea on Delmar for Ethiopian. That is, until it became completely intolerable. Careless waitresses blame any inconsistency on "the chef that didn't show up," as they take twenty-five minutes to give water glasses. Forty-five minutes later, when the food arrives - the raucous crowd and grab bag musical entertainment have already ruined the experience.

    Queen of Sheba, another option just north of Delmar on Olive is adequate to lackluster.

    The best destination for Ethiopian is Meskerem on South Grand! Whether in the rustic yellow entry room, or the newer modern blue dining room, the service is amazingly quick and friendly. The grinning manager (owner?) is always making rounds, greeting customers and bringing extra injera. You never have to ask for the community-style large platter, it’s the standard. The food is prepared surprisingly fast, and the portions are generous. My fiancé and I spend $15 on an appetizer and shared entree, yet always leave stuffed, vowing to pace ourselves next time.

    Go to Meskerem for delightful service, mouthwatering seasonings, and tremendous value!!!

    I have been to Meskerem about 5-6 times since it opened. My returned visits were always prompted by excellent previous experiences. A recent visit was with two friends who unanimously agreed that we would return for long lunch dates as the restaurant is so conducive to lingering.
    The gomen besaega at Meskerem was top notch, and the bitterness of the greens matched so well with several of the vegetarian entrees, especially the sweet, smokey, miser wat.
