Afghan native Qayum Mohammad and family serve up cuisine that tastes like a second cousin to Indian food -- and sometimes surpasses it. As with Indian cooking, you can expect boatloads of cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, etc., but not hot curry, so your forehead won’t start to sweat halfway through the meal. This fare stokes the palate like a cozy fire. Try the beriani dishes (seasoned basmati rice served with chicken, shrimp or lamb) or muntoo, a one-of-a-kind steamed pasta. And the menu’s pasta section is no misnomer; Mohammad knows his Italian cooking.
