In the ever adventurous spirit of blurring the lines between ice cream as a sweet treat and ice cream as pure gluttony, Baskin-Robbins has unveiled its new flavor of the month: French toast.
"I never thought of the breakfast and ice cream combination," manager of local Baskin-Robbins (9842 Clayton Road, Ladue; 314-997-5755) Dipali Patel says. "When the French toast came, I never imagined that they could make ice cream with French toast flavor."
According to Baskin-Robbins' website, the new treat is a French toast flavored ice cream with "gooey maple bread pudding." The ice cream carries the classic flavors of a French toast wet mix (eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon) while the small chunks of the bread pudding round out the need for syrup and bread.
On its own, the ice cream balances the sweet and spicy notes of French toast. However, the chief complaint with this dessert is the maple bread pudding; when paired with the already sweet ice cream, the sugary frozen maple bread pudding was overpowering and would give any diabetic night terrors (each 2.5 ounce serving of the ice cream packs 18 grams of sugar).
Patel says that this special flavor has been popular at her store so far, and could possibly stay past its September billing.
"They've never heard of French Toast ice cream, and that's a surprise," Patel says. "That's what makes them want to try it."
