Comment of the Day: Maybe TV Isn't Such a Bad Thing

Today's comment comes in response to a post late yesterday about Charter's new commercial praising the merits of watching TV.

This morning reader "Anon" commented:
*I* thought it was a ridiculous commercial, people proud to be in darkened rooms with the boob tube instead of doing something else, getting up and going outside and being active. I said this all out to the wife, who's a TV lover, and THEN I felt the fury. She made the argument that TV isn't any worse or better entertainment-wise than sitting in front of a computer for hours, picking up a book, or many other mediums, and that you're still sitting inside being sedentary. I tried to point out that the internet's more interactive, that you can gain more direct knowledge from spending hours on wikipedia or similar sites, but she countered that it's probably the same, or even less informative, than someone who would watch hours of documentaries and stick to channels like NatGeo the like. I still think she's not entirely correct and I still cringe when that commercial comes on... but I guess it's sitll a valid point.
