Yesterday was the federal holiday Juneteenth, the day that commemorates African Americans’ freedom from slavery. For U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, it was another chance to show that there's no depth he won't stoop to to impress his MAGA base.

Hawley sent out a tweet yesterday at 11 a.m. that read: “Today is a good day to remember: Christianity is the faith and America is the place slavery came to die.”

Immediately, Twitter began dragging the senator, pointing out that Christianity was used to justify slavery, that the U.S. was one of the last countries to abolish slavery and that he was an idiot. Some people even used the footage of Josh Hawley running away on January 6 to mock him running away from history books.

But don’t read our takes on the takes. Instead, check out Twitter’s responses, which range from hilarious to insightful.
