When an Irish immigrant named Andrew Sproule had a mansion built on Lindell Boulevard, he was in step with the times.

"Originally, the rich people lived in Lafayette Square, but when a tornado came through and destroyed Lafayette Square, these people rebuilt on Lindell," says Keith Manzer of Manzer Klages Real Estate Services. Sproule, who had immigrated from Ireland in 1827 and made his money in dry goods and lumber, was one in a group of westward-moving pioneers who helped shaped the streets of Westmoreland, Portland Place and Lindell in the years just before the World's Fair.

Sproule's mansion at 5175 Lindell facing Forest Park was completed in 1899, and Manzer believes it remains one of the finest examples of the craftsmanship of that time. He credits its current owners for painstakingly honoring its historic features. "They spent 10 years of restoration work on the home, as opposed to gutting it and redoing it," he says. "The whole house and been completely renovated and restored, and yet they've kept a lot of the original features."

It is a sizable treat. Counting the carriage house, the home offers 11,000 square feet of living space, with eight bedrooms, five baths and no less than eight fireplaces. But in addition to gorgeous millwork, African mahogany wainscoting and lovingly restored alabaster chandeliers, the house has all the modern comforts: six HVAC zones, a brand-new heated pool, a thoroughly renovated kitchen.

Says Manzer, "It's always a treat when you see a home done to this level. It's an architectural masterpiece."
