Great pizza, crispy salad dressed well and fantastic wine: What more could you ask for? That's the premise behind Amy and Matt Herren's 1929 Pizza & Wine in Wood River, Illinois. The pizzeria's fare stands out thanks to its wood-fired crust, which combines the thinness of a Neapolitan pie with a crunch bottom and slightly more heft. It's a wonderful base for offerings such as a potato pizza, which stuns with layers of taters sliced so thin as to be transparent.
If fare this delicious wasn't enough, 1929 also has a great story. After a 2021 fire devastated a century-old building in Wood River, an artist ran a depiction of what the revitalized building could someday be in the Alton Telegraph. Civic leaders ran with the idea and reached out to the Herrens.
